Music

At Beaver Green Primary School, it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable experience. The children’s understanding and enjoyment of music are developed through performing, composing, listening and appraising. 

To fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum we have subscribed the Primary Knowledge Curriculum. his is specifically designed so non-specialist teachers can provide high-quality music lessons. Teachers with specialisms in music are not constrained by the scheme and can use their expert knowledge alongside the scheme to further enrich the children's learning.

Musical ‘knowledge’ has been described as knowing how to make music, knowing musical practices with critical insight and knowing how music enriches the inner life: in summary... music making and music thinking. The Primary Knowledge Curriculum develops musical knowledge within this framework. An understanding of music can only begin to develop where the language of music is explored through experience. In this curriculum, such experience is developed through singing, listening, composing (including improvising) and performing. These musical practices are woven throughout the curriculum, and are carefully sequenced so that pupils can build procedural knowledge and technical skills through practice. This allows them to begin to realise and develop their own expressive
intentions through music.

To instil a sense of pride, accomplishment and community, we have weekly key stage singing assemblies where children learn a variety of different songs (from many genres!).

At Beaver Green, there is an opportunity for children to take lessons on an instrument with the peripatetic teacher from Kent Music - Our Year 4s currently learn the Ukulele. In addition to this, some children may request 1:1 tuition.

We hope that children who have had these experiences in music will have a developed self-belief and confidence, and that they may find a passion or lifelong love of music.
