The aims of our curriculum
We aim to provide a curriculum which is broad, balanced and rich. Enrichment opportunities are carefully selected to enhance and widen the breadth of knowledge and understanding that our children gain over their time with us. These are both on-site (Forest School & visitors to the school) and off-site (sailing, woodland, trips to London, Flip Out).
Our curriculum is designed to make links between different subjects, where these make sense, but also to take ‘deeper dives’ into standalone subjects, where this is the more logical approach.
Through a knowledge-led curriculum, children gain an understanding of the world around them as they refine and develop their skills across all subjects.
Our greatest aim is to prepare children for the next phase of their learning journey and for the world of work beyond.
Core Subjects
A focus on providing children with the tools to become amazing learners is a key strand in our EYFS and into Year 1. Children are provided with hands-on opportunities to take risks and to develop the collaborative social skills they will rely on as they move through the school and into the wider world.
Alongside these ‘foundations for learning’, a focus on developing the basic maths knowledge & skills and securing a working phonic knowledge are paramount and are the building blocks for the next stage of learning.
Our school chooses the Little Wandle to support the delivery of phonics. You can learn more about this by clicking 'Phonics and Early Reading' from the menu on the right.
Across KS2, the focus shifts to developing the skills of retrieval, inference and understanding authorial intent as part of the teaching of reading, while writing is taught through a clear sequence of learning, so that skills taught and knowledge acquired build up into coherent, complete pieces of text.
Mastery in the new approach used for Maths with White Rose and Power Maths used support the planning and delivery of a consistent maths approach in which children develop skills and knowledge over time.
The Broader Curriculum
In Early Years we follow the EYFS framework with learning through play and continuous provision supporting children to learn about themselves, others and the world. Our children benefit from having opportunities to build their knowledge and understanding of the World by experiencing new things like taking a bus ride, meeting animals or people who help us.
In the rest of the school, Computing, Music, PSHE, RE and Science are taught as ‘stand-alone’ subjects for the most part, although links are made to other learning where possible.
The rest of the curriculum is linked into themes where this makes sense in order to help children use the knowledge and skills learnt in one area of the curriculum into other areas of the curriculum.
Remote Learning
Google Classroom is used to provide remote learning opportunities to children who are not at school. All children have unique logins and can access this from home.
