Mathematics

At Beaver Green Primary School, we foster an ambitious Maths curriculum that enables pupils to become critical thinkers. We aim to develop a sense of curiosity, providing opportunities for pupils to develop transferable skills that they can apply to their knowledge of the world around them. Through a mastery approach, pupils will be able to secure a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps. Central to our approach are the 5 Big Ideas which underpin mastery in mathematics.

We aim to incorporate sustained levels of challenge through varied and high quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

  • Solve problems by applying their knowledge with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.

  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry by developing and presenting a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.

We place great emphasis on the use of concrete resources and pictorial representations at all ages, to enable children to fully understand the concepts and principals when presented with abstract calculations and questions. We encourage resilience, adaptability and acceptance that struggle is often a necessary step in learning. Our maths curriculum is progressive; it is designed to develop competencies to equip pupils to make connections and links between other areas of the curriculum.

Our curriculum allows children to better make sense of the world around them relating the pattern between mathematics and everyday life.
