Apple A Day Orchard Planting

On Thursday 30th October a group of Year 6 children attended Leas Court Estate in Faversham to help plant the Apple A Day Turner Contemporary Orchard.

This was day 3 of the project. Last year, the children visited Brogdale Farm in Faversham where they picked apples and then made apple juice. The second day of this project was visiting the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate where they had a guided tour of the Apple A Day exhibition by the artist Anya Gallaccio. This last visit was to plant an orchard full of rarer apple trees.  The children were walked around the orchard and shown how the trees would be planted in a spiral with shorter trees in the middle.  The field will also become a wild flower meadow.  The children got fully involved and dug the holes, planted the trees, placed the stake and mulched the finished tree.

All children and adults involved in this project have thoroughly enjoyed it and have learnt a lot about the different varieties of apples.  The children were an absolute credit to the school.
